Thriving This Summer with Your High-Energy Child

The high-energy child is the epitome of animation, expression, active power and might.

Encourage your child with positive phrases such as "With that energy you can achieve anything you want!" The potential of a child whose high-energy is channeled in positive ways is unlimited. Planning for ways to utilize and harness this energy is crucial to the success of the child and to the well being of a parent. High-energy kids often learn best through sensory experiences. When a child with high-energy starts misbehaving, it can be a cue that they need to move their body and engage their senses.

This summer, you can provide your child with opportunities to learn using hands-on activities and movement. To assist in guiding your high-energy child toward success, the International Network for Children and Families recommends that you:

  • Ensure that your child gets regular exercise.
  • Send active children outside to play.
  • Take kids on walks or to the park.
  • Select sports and activities that are fast action with fewer children.
  • Limit sugar intake.
  • Provide regular, healthy snacks since a high-energy child usually burns up fuel faster.
  • Schedule wind-down rituals at night.
  • Use gentle touch to calm and redirect the child that is over-energized.

Other Ways To Encourage Physical Movement And Learning

  • Counting by throwing foam balls.
  • Skipping, jumping rope or playing hopscotch.
  • Crawling or running laps.
  • Exploring motion by spinning or twirling.
  • Drawing in whipped cream, shaving cream or finger paint.
  • Tracing letters and numbers in sand, cornmeal or flour.
  • Spelling on own arms, hands or the carpet or window screen.
  • Making letters out of modeling clay.

Don't forget having your child help with chores is also a positive way to utilize extra energy and can help the whole family get to the beach quicker!
